Chairman's Chat

Dear Members

Welcome to Benoni Camera Club 2024!

We’ve had our first meeting for the new year and a few changes were apparent. We’ve had a prominent club member in Cathy Dooley leave not just the Chairmanship but also our club, and we’ve had a longstanding member in Shane Else join the Committee, upon request.

While everyone may have their opinions on the recent events, I would like to focus on a different aspect: our club’s ability to weather and even embrace change. We share a deep pool of knowledge and experience and a willingness to assist when required to do so. We are not the Chairperson or even the Committee, we are a group of friends with a shared passion.

In any group of people there will be differences of opinion, which is not bad in itself, but please reach out and above all, keep communication channels open, before deciding to give up on the club.

My wish for the year is twofold: firstly, enjoy the social aspects of photography with our outings and workshops and secondly, encourage continued growth, whether by Salon participation or improving our CERPS standing.

Here’s to a wonderful year of many awesome photos!

Regards, Anton
Acting-Chair

A message from our Chair …

Dear Members

As the season starts changing, so do the photo graphic opportunities they offer.

Our Autumn leaves are already showing, giving us rich colours, not only on the trees, but on the ground as well. Try and use this opportunity to use the complimentary colours of the leaves against the deep, blue sky.

Use the leaves as props in a photo-shoot or get out your wide lenses and shoot the beautiful scapes of the trees.

Another thing to look out for are nuts and acorns that will start falling as well. Collect these to use in still life set ups during those cold winter days when we would rather be in-side.

I’m looking forward to some great images from this Autumn—go and explore your world!

Kind regards,
Cathy

A message from our Chair …

What an honor it is to have been appointed the Chair for Benoni Camera Club.

Please know that my door is always open and I’d like you to feel comfortable to contact me should you need any advice or assistance or just to have a chat about whatever is on your mind.

The Committee and I have been working hard to try to get everything in place for you to have an enjoyable camera club experience.

So let’s go places we’ve never been, meet new friends along the way and enjoy our photography to its fullest!

Kind regards,
Cathy

The time has come for me to step down from the Committee

Dear Members

The time has come for me to step down from the Committee.

I have served on the committee since 2015 and have served as Chairman from 2018.

During this time I have had the pleasure of seeing the club grow, both in members and quality of work. I have made friends with lots of interesting people.

I joined the club as a beginner with the sole purpose of having a place to go on outings with like-minded people..I still believe that Benoni is the best club on the Rand for outings and training.

Although I am stepping down from the committee, I have no plans to leave the Club … so look for-ward to seeing you all at Club meetinga and on outings.

I wish to thank the Club for allowing me to take the Chair for this time … it has been an honour.

Best wishes,
Shane

Maintaining Motivation for Taking Photos

Staying motivated with photography is more likely when you love what you are doing. This can mean having great camera gear to work with. It becomes more of a reality when you love what you are photographing.

Many beginner photographers are not consistent with what they photograph. Some move on and discover favourite topics they photograph for years. Others point their cameras at whatever random shiny thing attracts them. They may begin to wonder why they lose interest after a short time.

Having purpose and a plan is what motivates photographers. For professional photographers the purpose is clear. Paying the bills is a driving motivation until they become stars, then they can photograph what and how they like. For hobby photographers, discovering what they want to photograph is not so driven by need.
Once you do find what drives you, picking up your camera becomes a whole new experience. Your thought process will change. Hopefully, you’ll be so consumed by your passion you will of-ten think about it even when your camera is not with you.

Finding out what you like to take photos of is a process. Some people will discover this quickly, even before they buy their first camera. For others, it takes a while. One thing is for sure. The more you are aware of discovering your passion, the more opportunity you will have to find it.

Keeping an open mind about what and why you photograph will help you maintain motivation. Your photography will not grow stale when you are seeking to photograph the same things in a better way.

Learning to identify what you enjoy helps keep a freshness in your photography too. Life is nev-er idle. It changes by choices we make or sometimes because of circumstances beyond our control. Keeping an open mind and looking for new subjects to photograph is a great way of staying motivated.

Regards,
Shane
